What is Boots dental insurance?
Boots Health Hub dental plans are dental cashback plans underwritten by Cigna Europe Insurance Company and sold through the Boots brand. They are available to purchase online without needing to visit a Boots pharmacy or dental practice.
There are three levels: Level 1 (£9.49/month), Level 2 (£12.99/month), and Level 3 (£17.99/month). Unlike Denplan — where you join through a dentist and pay for comprehensive cover — Boots dental plans work on a cashback model: you pay for treatment, submit a claim, and receive a percentage back up to an annual limit.
Boots dental plan prices and what is covered
Level 1 — £9.49/month Annual dental cashback: up to £200 (75% of dental costs up to this limit) Routine check-up cover: yes Emergency dental treatment: yes (UK) Worldwide accident cover: yes Waiting period: 3 months for routine treatment
Level 2 — £12.99/month Annual dental cashback: up to £300 Routine check-up cover: yes Emergency dental treatment: yes (UK and abroad) Worldwide accident cover: yes Waiting period: 3 months
Level 3 — £17.99/month Annual dental cashback: up to £600 Routine check-up cover: yes Emergency dental treatment: yes (UK and abroad) Specialist referral cover: partial Waiting period: 3 months
All levels include a 3-month waiting period before you can claim for routine treatment. Emergency dental treatment has no waiting period.
How does Boots dental cover compare to rivals?
Versus Simplyhealth: Simplyhealth Level 1 (£8.50/month) offers £120/year cashback — lower limit than Boots Level 1 (£200) but cheaper monthly. Simplyhealth Level 2 (£17.50/month) provides up to £500 cashback, which compares favourably with Boots Level 3 at £600 but Boots costs slightly less at that tier.
Versus Denplan: This is not a fair direct comparison because Denplan is a fundamentally different product. Denplan Care (£15–£22+/month) covers unlimited restorative treatment with no annual cashback limit. If you need frequent fillings or any major work, Denplan will almost certainly be better value than any cashback plan including Boots.
Versus Boots Level 2 specifically: The sweet spot in the Boots range is Level 2 at £12.99/month. The step up from Level 1 adds £3.50/month but provides £100 more annual cashback and extends emergency cover abroad — reasonable value for most users.
What we like about Boots dental plans
Easy online sign-up: Boots plans can be purchased in minutes online. There is no requirement to visit a dentist first or register with a Boots practice.
Works with any dentist: You are not tied to a specific dental network. Any GDC-registered dentist qualifies for claims.
Boots brand trust: The Boots brand is well-known and trusted in the UK, which gives some consumers more confidence than lesser-known insurance brands.
Accident cover included: All tiers include dental injury cover for accidents, which is useful for sports or active lifestyles.
What we do not like
3-month waiting period: You cannot claim for routine treatment for the first three months. If you need a check-up imminently, you will not be covered immediately.
Low Level 1 cashback: £200/year sounds reasonable, but two private check-ups in London (£60 each) plus a hygiene visit (£90) already totals £210 — you would only recover £157 in cashback (75% of £210). In London, Level 1 barely covers routine maintenance.
Underwritten by Cigna: While Cigna is a large, reputable insurer, some customers prefer dealing with a dedicated dental plan provider for claims and customer service.
Our verdict: is Boots dental insurance worth it?
Boots dental insurance is a solid, mid-market option that is particularly well-suited to:
Patients who want simple, online sign-up with no dentist registration required. People living outside London and the South East, where treatment costs are lower and £200–£300 cashback goes further. Patients who have healthy teeth and mainly want cover for routine appointments and peace of mind for emergencies.
We do not recommend Boots dental plans for patients who need significant restorative work — the annual cashback limits will be quickly exhausted. In that case, Denplan Care will deliver significantly better value despite a higher monthly premium.
Our recommended tier: Level 2 at £12.99/month for most users.
